11 WAYS TO KEEP ACTIVE THIS WINTER IN FREDERICTON

With winter upon us, you may find yourself wondering what to do with your leisure time – as the trails become covered in snow and ice and it’s so cold that you really won’t enjoy a typical, leisurely stroll outdoors.

Luckily here in Fredericton there is tons of opportunity to keep active! Here is a list of our favourite ways to keep busy during the winter months!

Skating At The Arenas

Skating can be a fun seasonal activity and definitely can get the heart rate up! Most of the local rinks offer some open skate time. Here is where you can find the rink schedule: http://www.fredericton.ca/en/recreation. If you don’t like skating in arenas there are plenty of outdoor rinks in and around the city to check out once the weather cooperates.

Walking At The Indoor Tracks

We are lucky enough to have very nice indoor tracks on both the north and the south side. You can find the track schedules here: http://www.fredericton.ca/en/recreation You can invite friends along too. Not only does it make for a fun social activity, you may also end up with an accountability partner that keeps you motivated to keep going for those walks.

Enjoy Swimming!

While free swim or lap swim may not be for everyone, it can be an excellent way to stay active in the winter months, especially if you have any ongoing injuries. Swimming is a low-impact activity that is easier on those aching joints. Check out the indoor pools in the city, whether its free swims or lap swims its great exercise!

Try A Court Sport

There is open gym time at FHS, Nashwaaksis Fieldhouse, and the YMCA, just to name a few. It’s a perfect opportunity to shoot some hoops or try some other court activities during your spare time

Enjoy The Outdoors

Killarney lake, Odell park, and UNB woodlots have beautiful winter trails for walking, snowshoeing and cross country skiing. Mactaquac also has beautiful trails if you are up for the drive! If you are a more thrill seeking person, Crabbe mountain offers great downhill skiing or snowboarding.

Winter Waterfall Wonderland

If you are adventurous, there are several waterfalls in and around the city that you can snowshoe or hike into. Not only is this a great physical activity, it comes with some great views once you reach your destination. Here is a link to some of the ones close by: http://www.tourismfredericton.ca/en/blog/201905/fredericton-waterfalls

Frostival

FROSTival is a great opportunity to head outside and participate in all of the planned events around the city. There’s something for everyone, with 150+ events over three jam packed weekends from January 16 – February 2. Here is the link to the event: http://frostival.ca

Go For A Slide

If you’re trying to get in touch with your inner kid or have kids/grandkids that want to get outside, sledding is always a great winter activity.

Explore Local Shops and Restaurants

Walking downtown to do some shopping and checking out some of the local coffee shops can be a great afternoon activity.

Go For A Bowl

Not an outdoorsy person? How about bowling? The local lanes at Kingswood or The Drome can be another great chance to get together with friends and also get in some activity.

Try The Gym

The winter, especially around the new year, is a great time to commit to that exercise program you’ve been thinking about doing or that gym membership you’ve been thinking about getting. Joining a gym or an exercise class helps you by adding some accountability to the activity. Having someone from the group say, “We missed you last class!” can be a powerful motivator to keep your attendance up.

If you really don’t like the sound of any of these activities check out the art galleries, Boyce Farmers market,  libraries, museums, live music, and theaters (and I’m sure there are many more options around the city). When it comes down to it, sometimes it’s good just to get out of the house – no particular activity needed.
